One of the highlights of the week for most people is receiving a letter or a package
from their mom, dad, son or daughter. However, the “Law of the Mail” states, “In general, you must send in order
to receive”. This page contains 20 ideas of what you can “send in order to receive”.
As you begin sending, you will not only begin receiving but will also find your relationship with your mom, dad,
son or daughter will grow stronger as you nourish it from a distance.
In those rare cases where you have been sending and have not yet received anything in return, be patient and don’t
give up. Send your mom, dad, son or daughter an email with the link to this page, and then continue to use the
activities to stay in touch.
By now you are probably getting tired of reading, “mom, dad, son or daughter”. To make the activities easier to
read, we will alternate between mom, dad, son and daughter. Regardless of wording, all activities can be used for
any family member. However, if an activity doesn’t fit your situation, then be creative and change it or choose
a different activity.
Most of all we recommend you have fun nourishing this relationship that can bring you years of joy and happiness.
1. Ask your dad who his hero is and why. Share with your dad who your hero is and
why.
2. Make a video or photo documentary of what you do during the day. If possible, have your daughter make a similar
documentary.
3. Start writing your own personal history and send a copy of it to your son. Encourage your son to keep a journal
and/or write his own personal history.
4. Begin a “Life’s Lessons Booklet.” Each week write down a few of the lessons you’ve learned in life and how you
learned them. When the booklet is full, send it to your mom.
5. Ask your dad for a list of 5-10 things he would like to do with you in the next few years. In future letters
make detailed plans of when and how you will do these things.
6. Ask your daughter what she would do if elected President of the United States. Tell your daughter what you would
do if you were elected.
7. Choose a photo from your photo album that you can send to your son. Write a letter about the memories you associate
with the photo. Ask your son to do the same and send each other your responses.
8. Read the Sunday paper at the same time. Call and talk about the different issues you both came across.
9. Share with your son what you do to relax and have fun. Ask your son what he does.
10. In a letter formatted as a newspaper article, brag about your dad. Then send it to him.
11. Learn more about your daughter’s favorite sport. Then write and tell her what you are learning and ask additional
questions.
12. Play chess or checkers together through the mail.
13. Pick a day when you both will perform random acts of kindness. For example:
rake the neighbor’s leaves, pay someone’s toll, etc. Call each other at the end of the day to share how things
went.
14. Have a “Super Sports Night” with your dad. Order pizza and watch a sports event at the same time. Call each
other after each exciting play.
15. Play the “Money Game”. Ask your daughter what she would do if given one million dollars. Share what you would
do with the money. Talk about dreams, goals, investments, etc.
16. After arranging to watch the same TV program, both you and your son write an alternative ending to the story
and include it in your next letter or e-mail.
17. Together write letters to the President or other politician/civic leaders. You can start the letter and then
have your mom finish it or vice versa.
18. Arrange for your daughter to visit an elderly person in a nursing home. Do the same at a nursing home close
to you. Share your experiences through letters or by phone.
19. Make a treat and give it to someone. Have your son do the same.
20. Create individual exercise programs for both you and your dad. Include rewards for reaching your goals.
